Kiss

As weathered as the battered coastline from which they spring, these massive steel forms resemble gnarled hands in the throes of a desperate tussle with the elements. Placing this work at the boundaries of land, sea and air, where one thing becomes another and the chemical properties of opposites meet, Chillida explores the fluidity and essential differences between matter. The Clothespin become associated with Philadelphia through its use on a poster for the exhibition Object Into Monument at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1973. The joined parts, bound by two springs, recalled the embracing couple in Brancusi's sculpture The Kiss in the museum's collection.
